The Oshkosh City Transportation Committee unanimously recommended removing a bus loading zone and school-day no-parking restrictions on New York Street that were tied to the former Merrill School.
Staff explained that when New York Street was reconstructed, a curb cut and bus loading zone were installed to serve the school. With Merrill School demolished and student drop-off consolidated on Kentucky Street, the bus loading zone and related school-day restrictions (7 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) are no longer needed.
Staff described three specific changes: removing a north-side bus loading zone (unused since the school moved), removing a south-side school-day no-parking zone from Kentucky to the Maryland/Westin block, and removing a school-day no-parking restriction from Merrill to 30 feet west of Central. The staff presenter said the north side cutout was designed for buses but is no longer used.
A committee member moved to remove all three items together; the motion passed by roll call: Armstrong, Merritt, Hartman, Lynch and Martin voted yes. Staff said the changes would be forwarded to the Common Council as an ordinance revision.
Committee members noted the changes affect mostly residential curb space and are intended to restore general parking where the school-related restrictions are obsolete.
