Committee approves extending no-parking zone at Sixth Avenue and Oregon to accommodate hospital access

The committee unanimously recommended a permanent extension of a no-parking zone on the south side of Sixth Avenue (from Oregon) by 50 feet west to allow MRI trucks and other hospital-related vehicles to use the truck route safely.
The Transportation Committee unanimously recommended extending the no-parking zone on the south side of Sixth Avenue from Oregon Street by an additional 50 feet west to accommodate vehicle access related to the new hospital.
Staff said the extension responds to hospital operations: an MRI trailer and other large vehicles need room to make a left turn to access Oregon Street and use the truck route. Staff explained a previously closed driveway and ongoing hospital access needs make the change effectively permanent.
"This is in relation to the new hospital...they need to be able to make that left turn to get down to Oregon Street so they can take the truck route," a staff member said. Committee members discussed whether the restriction would affect a nearby residence; staff said the change primarily affected a single house that appears to have a deep driveway.
A member moved and seconded the request and the committee approved it by roll call: Armstrong, Merritt, Hartman, Lynch and Martin voted yes. Staff said the change will be permanent and will be forwarded as an ordinance amendment to the Common Council.
