The Gallatin City Council committee voted unanimously on May 13 to send a resolution to the full council authorizing the city to apply for a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant. The application would request $300,000 for a comprehensive safety action plan; the grant requires a 20% local match and staff proposed a $60,000 general-fund transfer upon award.
Jake Wilson explained the SS4A program funds planning and infrastructure projects that improve pedestrian and intersection safety and described the application as the first step in a multi-stage strategy: a funded safety action plan would position the city for subsequent project funding through SS4A and other sources. Wilson said Gallatin has applied in prior years without award and that recent changes to the application improve this year’s prospects.
A motion by Councilman Carter, seconded by Vice Mayor Hayes, moved the resolution forward; the committee voted unanimously to send it to council. Staff said the resolution will allow the city to submit the application and, if awarded, transfer matching funds from the general fund to cover the required 20% match.
Ending Staff will prepare the full application and return to council with the grant agreement and budget language if the award is made.
