Parks staff briefed the advisory board on completed and upcoming park improvements, erosion control work and storm-related damage that will require a contractor schedule and an insurance claim.
Work underway or planned includes a paved path to the dog park from the pond pathway and paving inside the dog-park entrance at Roberts Mill Park, riprap installation on the pond’s east shoreline where erosion has brought the waterline 4½–5 feet close to the path, and planned repairs to the pump track at THS Park and basketball court realignment at Roberts Mill Park. The board was also briefed that new black slatted memorial benches have been installed at Roberts Mill and Bollinger parks.
Lorena reported that the new surfacing of the Neo Station at Memorial Park was damaged by a large branch during an April 19 storm and that the repair estimate is about $34,000. “That surfacing is pricey. We put it through as an insurance claim because it was gonna be like $34,000 to repair what was damaged,” she said. Staff explained that small patches are not feasible for that surfacing; a larger repair area and binder application are required, which drives cost.
Staff said a contractor (Hobbs) will install the paved dog-park path and the entrance corral as weather allows. Riprap (rock revetment) will be placed to protect the eroding shoreline near the proposed path; staff noted that funds to replenish existing riprap farther along the shoreline are not currently available and would likely be sought next year.
Board members discussed pavilion ceiling and concrete floor work at Memorial Park; staff said ceilings were installed for pavilions 1, 3, 4 and 5 but Pavilion 2 will require excavation to install a concrete floor and that staff may seek donated or discounted construction work. Staff also noted deer browsing has limited the success of the Pollinator Meadow plantings at Bollinger Park.
No formal action was taken; the discussion was an operational update and planning briefing.
