Birmingham City officials announced the start of a regional community engagement process for a Central Alabama Climate Action Plan and invited residents across Central Alabama to take part in public meetings starting May 13.
City officials said the Climate Action Plan effort extends beyond Birmingham’s borders to include Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Shelby, St. Clair, Walker and Jefferson counties and is intended to “address both the current as well as future climate challenges.” The first of several engagement meetings was listed for 5:30 p.m. May 13 at the Homewood Public Library, 1721 Oxmoor Road.
The mayor’s office framed the plan as a regional effort “to thrive as a vibrant and sustainable area for all of us, but especially for our youngest generation and those generations to come,” and urged residents to participate in shaping strategies for climate and environmental challenges affecting the region.
The announcement came during the mayor’s report at the council meeting; staff did not present a draft plan text or a timeline for plan adoption during the meeting. No formal vote or budget appropriation for the Climate Action Plan was taken at this session.
City officials also noted related public programs and events in the mayor’s communications but did not tie specific funding or regulatory changes to the engagement effort. Follow-up materials and meeting schedules were referenced as available from the City of Birmingham’s communications channels.
