Hidalgo County Commissioners Court on May 13, 2025 adopted a proclamation designating the week of May 25–30 as Hurricane Awareness Week and heard presentations on a county hurricane preparedness public-information campaign and a monthly series of “Hidalgo County Ready” pop-up preparedness events.
County public-health and emergency-management staff described two initiatives. First, Hidalgo County Public Health Emergency Preparedness will post a series of short informational videos and preparedness guidance across county social-media platforms during the week to encourage residents to build emergency kits and family plans ahead of hurricane season (June 1–Nov. 30). Second, the Office of Emergency Management presented a monthly “Hidalgo County Ready” pop-up series to be hosted across precincts and community centers. The pop-ups will provide educational booths, multimedia presentations, briefings from local partner organizations and free emergency kits to the first 25 families at each event.
Emergency-management staff emphasized household preparedness steps — maintaining three to seven days of supplies, checking prescriptions, securing fuel and protecting important documents. Staff also stated the county will collaborate with precincts, schools, drainage districts and state partners to reach vulnerable populations.
Ending: The court approved the proclamation and the pop-up event plan by voice vote and staff will proceed with the public messaging and a schedule of pop-up events in coordination with precinct offices.
