The City Council authorized the mayor to work with staff to finalize a template letter residents can give to insurance providers to document the city's wildfire mitigation efforts.
Staff explained residents have reported insurance nonrenewals and premium increases tied to wildfire risk. The proposed letter compiles the city's wildfire mitigation actions, community wildfire protection plan references and other local efforts intended to demonstrate mitigation work to insurers.
Councilmembers recommended adding programmatic details to the letter, including reference to the city's Community Wildfire Protection Plan (adopted 2020, revised 2022), the block-captain program, and local development patterns (e.g., minimum lot sizes in portions of the city) that reduce immediate structure-to-structure radiant-heat exposure. Council asked staff to include those points and to make the letter a living document that the mayor can update as mitigation work continues.
The council voted to authorize the mayor to finalize the letter and to instruct staff to post a downloadable PDF on the city website and include it in the blue newsletter for residents to use when communicating with insurance providers.
