The City Council declared a vacancy on the Traffic Commission after staff reported that Commissioner Val Margueta, who had served for many years, has been unable to continue due to health issues and the recent death of her husband.
Staff told the council that the traffic commission had requested staff seek a resignation letter but that the commissioner's caretaker indicated a resignation letter would not be possible. Council directed staff to follow the regular public-notice and appointment process under the city's procedures and the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act (typical municipal appointment practice) and to re-contact applicants who recently applied for commission seats.
Staff said it will publicly post the vacancy, accept applications for the position, and forward candidates to the personnel committee for interviews and a recommendation to the council. The mayor and council expressed appreciation for Commissioner Margueta's long service.
