The North Kingstown Policy Advisory Committee voted May 12 to forward an updated curriculum review and adoption policy (IGF) to the School Committee for first reading, a step administrators said updates an older chart, clarifies responsibilities and incorporates state Basic Education Program guidance.
Presenters described the draft as a modernization of a policy last substantially revised in 2006 and said it replaces an outdated curriculum chart with a new review cycle that lists assessment of student needs, development of goals and objectives, materials selection, staff development and implementation. The draft also adds language on equity and recommends aligning implementation with Rhode Island’s Basic Education Program (BEP) and related RIDE guidance.
Administration noted the new chart sets a scheduled cycle for curriculum review by subject area and removes details considered obsolete from the 2006 policy. Committee members asked clarifying questions about where implementation duties sit (department curriculum directors, central office and building staff) and whether the policy should explicitly reference implementation steps; presenters said implementation language is present in the draft and suggested the title could read “curriculum review, adoption and implementation” if the committee preferred.
Committee discussion also covered the relationship between adopted curriculum and high‑quality, vendor‑provided curriculum materials, and whether the policy should explicitly reference state regulations; administrators recommended citing the BEP and relevant Rhode Island General Laws as the policy’s legal foundation. A committee member asked that the policy regionally reference the BEP’s 2018 update to make the regulatory context explicit.
After discussion the committee moved the policy IGF to the School Committee for a first read (May 20 was discussed as the likely first‑read date). The motion passed on a voice vote.
