Staff described a districtwide cardiac emergency-response effort that includes building-team rosters, standardized code-blue forms, AED location maps and proposed outreach to local EMS. Presenters said the district already has AEDs deployed in buildings, conducts monthly checks and uses portable AEDs for off-site events; they noted a grant opportunity the district plans to pursue to add AEDs at athletic complexes. Staff said they will submit finalized plans to KDHE and expected to bring completed plans to the board for final approval in June.
Separately, staff returned student handbooks for final approval after legal review. The presenter said changes were minimal and focused on aligning health-related policies with KDHE recommendations, clarifying tardy expectations and updating a virtual-student policy to match KSDE graduation requirements. The board voted to approve the handbook updates.
Board members discussed signage for AED locations, use of portable units at athletic fields, and training and simulation plans; staff said they will continue to coordinate with local EMS to rehearse response procedures and to notify families about AED locations and the district's response plans.
