The Yucaipa City Council on May 12 introduced and approved the first reading of an ordinance (4‑54) adopting by reference a county sheriff schedule of firearms‑storage fees and related sheriff’s services.
Staff explained the city currently accepts firearms for safekeeping in cases where ownership becomes illegal, when firearms are evidence, or when property owners request short‑term storage. Since 2021, staff reported the police/service desk had accepted several hundred firearms for safekeeping. Unlike many surrounding sheriff’s contract stations, Yucaipa had not adopted a local fee schedule to recover administrative costs. The county board of supervisors’ fee schedule, which staff proposed to adopt by reference, charges $80 for the first firearm and $39 for each additional firearm plus a storage fee.
Council approved the ordinance’s introduction and first reading by roll call and directed staff to return for second reading and final adoption. Staff said the change aligns the city with county practice and allows recovery of administrative handling and storage costs for firearms held by the department.
