Board hears recommendations to keep AP precalculus and adopt new AP government text
Summary
District teachers recommended continuing with an AP precalculus curriculum aligned to the College Board and recommended a new AP U.S. Government textbook (American Government: Stories of a Nation) to replace an older 2014 text. Both items were discussed as future action items.
The West Bend School District curriculum team presented two separate advanced-placement recommendations: continuing with a vetted AP precalculus resource aligned to the College Board’s course and exam description and replacing the district’s AP U.S. Government textbook with a more current title.
Math staff said the College Board approved AP precalculus as a new AP course and that district teachers adjusted honors precalculus content to meet the AP Course and Exam Description. The team piloted Math Medic by Sarah Stecker and recommended continuing with that resource; the recommendation will be brought back as an action item for board approval.
For AP U.S. Government and Politics, Program Administrator Heather Isaacson said the current textbook (a 2014 edition) is no longer aligned with recent course redesigns and is not on the College Board’s example textbook list. Teachers Mark Drake, Dave Thomas and literacy specialist Leslie Delaine vetted four College Board–approved texts and recommended American Government: Stories of a Nation as the best fit for updated content, formative practice and free-response preparation. Isaacson said the materials were on public display but received no public comments during the display period.
Both items were presented as discussion items and will appear on a future agenda for board action. Board members asked about likely student enrollment numbers for AP precalculus and about online/supplemental resources and publisher updates for the AP government text.
