McKinney ISD board adopts local policy updates including restricted use of vaporizing devices on campuses

At the May 12 meeting the board approved Update 1-24, a set of local policy amendments drafted to conform McKinney ISD's board policies with recent state law changes.
Aretha Jackson, senior director of legal affairs, presented a summary of the recommended local-policy changes across several policy sections, identifying updates in business (investment policy and intellectual property), personnel (additions regarding tobacco and electronic vaporizing devices), instruction (dyslexia alignment and gifted-and-talented program policy), students, and community relations.
Jackson told trustees the changes reflect enacted laws from the most recent legislative session and administrative rules finalized by state agencies. The personnel-related changes clarify that products containing tobacco or electronic vaporizing devices are prohibited on district premises regardless of whether the product contains tobacco, and the updates to gifted-and-talented policies reference the state plan and fund-use requirements.
Board members asked procedural questions about employee accommodations (for example, whether nicotine-replacement therapy for employees would be accommodated), and staff noted those matters would be handled through established accommodation processes with human resources and physicians when appropriate.
After discussion a motion to accept Update 1-24 passed by voice vote; Mr. Jaggers and Mr. Wahaca were recorded by the clerk as the first and second on the motion. The changes will be incorporated into the district's local policy manual and published as part of the board policy update cycle.
