Third-grade art contest winners to be honored at May 20 Carlsbad City Council meeting

Sheila Crosby, deputy library director, and Christy Bell, senior librarian for genealogy and Carlsbad history, updated the Historic Preservation Commission on the annual third-grade art contest Drawing on Carlsbad's Past and the May 20 City Council presentation.
Crosby said the program partners with Carlsbad schools so third-graders study local history as part of classwork and create artistic representations of historic sites. Winners — up to three from each participating school — receive a certificate and a gift during the council proclamation for Historic Preservation Month. "Each will come forward to receive their items, being the certificate and their gift," Crosby said. The winners will then join the council and commissioners on the east lawn for refreshments and photos.
City staff reported seven schools are participating this year and that the final delivery date for artwork to the Cole Library was May 2. Crosby said the assembled contest entries will be on display in the City Council chamber after the presentation and then moved to the Cole Library for a summer exhibit as part of the library's summer reading program. She noted an operational detail from past years: the event provides refreshments and that "chocolate chip cookies are the only type of cookies that they have any interest in eating, so that's what we will be serving again this year," she said.
Commissioners praised the program. Commissioner Schreiber said the contest is an important early civic engagement opportunity for students and thanked library and commission staff for coordinating the event. Staff liaison Mike Strong and commission representatives were named to accept the proclamation and distribute awards: Liaison Mike Strong will accept the proclamation, and designated commissioners will hand out certificates and art kits.
The commissioners were invited to attend the presentation and the subsequent display at Cole Library. No public comments were offered during the meeting.
