Two candidates for two open school-board seats addressed the Batavia City School District board during the meeting, offering short remarks ahead of a district election scheduled for next Tuesday.
An incumbent who identified herself as Jess said she would like to continue serving on the board and described gaining experience during her current term. Her comments were brief and focused on continuing work "for the kids" and adding value through further service.
Dan Schmidt, the challenger, spoke at length about his family'centered reasons for running and his experience in local volunteer and youth work. Schmidt described moving to Batavia nearly 18 years ago, meeting district leaders and teachers while his two sons progressed through the schools, and deciding to run to "give back" after his sons graduated. He said he has served in community roles including as a wrestling referee and as a pastor and emphasized a platform of investing in students and supporting teachers and administration. Schmidt told the board he did not come with a specific agenda beyond investment in the district's students and community.
The superintendent reminded the public that voting will be held next Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Robert Morris and Batavia High School and that the budget and board seats will be on that ballot. The meeting materials list two board-member seats up for election and identify one incumbent. The district advised voters to consult the full ballot and the district website for details.
