Subcommittee backs veterans property tax work-off abatement program ordinance

The Revere Legislative Affairs Subcommittee voted to forward an ordinance establishing rules and regulations for a veteran property tax work-off abatement program to the full City Council.

Supporters described the program as a way to ease property tax burdens for veterans by offering community-service work-off opportunities. "By easing their property tax burden through the community service, we're not only providing financial relief, we're also strengthening the bond between our veterans and the community they helped protect," a councilor said during the meeting.

Public speakers and councilors urged flexibility in eligibility documentation and in program capacity. Councilor Hass noted that senior work-off participation has declined and suggested increasing veterans' slots "to more than 5, maybe up to 10, but as many as will be allowed." Councilor Ira Novosalski requested that NGB Form 22 be included as an acceptable form of documentation for reservists with 20 or more years of service. Clarence Arillo of the solicitor's office recommended starting with DD Form 214 as the required document and keeping the initial enrollment pool small because the Veterans Service Office is undergoing staffing changes; he said the office can expand eligibility later if demand warrants.

The subcommittee approved the ordinance recommendation unanimously. Roll-call votes recorded Councilor Greeno Sawaya, Councilor Hass, Councilor Kelly, Councilor McKenna and Chairman Argencio voting yes; the clerk announced the ordinance will be sent to the full council that evening.
