Subcommittee backs ordinance to allow daytime Ways and Means budget hearings

Supporters said holding budget hearings in daytime hours will improve participation by city departments. "I've already stated at length why I believe this is a good idea," Councilor Anthony Cogliano said, adding he had contacted city departments and "received 18 responses from the departments, including the fire department, the chief of police, and 16 other departments that are all in favor of having these during the day."
The ordinance received a favorable recommendation on a 3-2 roll call. Councilor Greeno Sawaya, Councilor McKenna and Chairman Argencio voted yes; Councilor Hass and Councilor Kelly voted no. The clerk announced the ordinance will be forwarded to the full City Council that evening.
The subcommittee record shows brief discussion and no amendments at this meeting; the measure now moves to the full council for consideration.
