Coffee County updates construction timeline for new middle school, cites storm and steel delays

The Coffee County Board of Education received an update on two major facilities projects, including the new Coffee Middle School, with staff saying the district is targeting completion in early 2026.
A district presenter told the board the current schedule shows a realistic end date of January 2026, though the contractor said this morning he had planned for a possible move‑in during the December 2025 break; the presenter added that the contractor did not have that estimate in writing.
Construction photos and video the presenter shared show brickwork, roofing and pavement progress. The presenter said the gym will connect to the main building via a hallway and noted the project’s layout in relation to the high school campus.
Staff described supply issues and a recent storm as the primary causes of earlier delays. The contractor reported problems with a steel vendor that hampered delivery; staff said much of the steel uprights went up quickly once the metal arrived. Storm damage to the slab site required additional sand replacement before pouring, staff said.
On site selection, staff said the district chose the Millstone site because the district already owns the property and the middle‑school site would have required a sewage pump station and a lengthy road alteration — an estimated roughly $1.5 million in additional costs — making Millstone more “build‑ready.”
Staff also reviewed remaining storm repairs across the district, saying most items are complete but that fencing repairs remain at several schools and one school, West Green, will be held until project completion. Satilla’s bus canopy panels require a matched replacement, and an ordered shelter and some HVAC covers are pending delivery, staff said.
Officials signaled continued contractor coordination: pavement and main drive work have been completed and signage quotes remain outstanding while contractors return for final measurements. No formal decision or vote on the projects was made at the meeting; staff committed to keeping the board updated as work continues.
