Southgate reports turf repairs, tree trimming and drainage work in grounds maintenance review

The Parks and Recreation Commission on May 8 received a third‑quarter report from grounds and facility maintenance covering plantings, field renovations and improvements to park infrastructure.
Glenn (grounds and facility maintenance supervisor) told commissioners staff planted 60 azaleas at the Azalea Garden adjacent to the senior building, completed tree trimming at Holiday Regional Park, and used remaining funds to trim around playground trees. Staff renovated baseball and soccer fields citywide, installed three French drains behind Baseball Diamond No. 9 at Southgate Park to improve drainage, reseeded adjacent turf and added decomposed granite to create defined paths of travel behind that diamond. Glenn said staff renovated decomposed granite pathways and improved turf in Westside area parks (State Street Park, Cesar Chavez area). He also reported increased pressure‑washing around playgrounds, continued third‑daily restroom inspections and additional cleaning/disinfecting protocols.
Glenn said park crews assisted police with cleanup and removal of homeless encampments in Westside parks during the quarter, hosted the Azaya car show at the golf course and continued monthly food giveaways at Holiday Community and Regional Park. The report noted new restroom privacy walls (to discourage loitering) at State Street Park restrooms and the addition of a weekend park facility maintenance worker. Glenn said the community service worker program continues with up to 15 people per day.
Commissioners praised staff responsiveness to tagging and playground repairs; a question about a bent volleyball post drew a response that public‑works crews had repaired the post and replaced nets. The commission voted to receive and file the grounds report.
