Linda Wetzel, who said she lives at 108 Atlantic Street, told the Summerville Town Council on May 8 that dogs at the farmer's market and a lack of traffic enforcement have created safety and quality-of-life problems in her neighborhood.
"We do not need dogs at the farmer's market," Wetzel said, describing multiple incidents in which dogs approached or bit her while she shopped. She said a dog pulled free of its owner and came under her clothes while she was at the market. Wetzel asked the council to prohibit dogs at the farmer's market and to increase police patrols and traffic-calming measures on Atlantic Street, including speed bumps.
Wetzel also complained about people dumping trash on vacant lots at night and said she has repeatedly contacted code enforcement to clear piles. She told the council she does not see police on Atlantic Street and asked for more visible enforcement.
The council received Wetzel's comments during the public-comment portion of the meeting; no immediate vote or staff directive was recorded on the transcript excerpt.
