U.N. warns violence in Haiti’s central region has displaced thousands and strained child-protection services

Farhan, U.N. spokesperson, said the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that a recent wave of armed violence in Haiti’s Centre department has displaced more than 50,000 people since mid-April, including an estimated 15,000 children.
Most displaced families are sheltering in rural areas or temporary sites with limited access to services. The U.N. and partners have provided psychosocial support and child-protection services; field teams report more than 1,400 children have received individual counseling and recreational activities. Teams have identified at least 150 cases of children separated from families, survivors of gender-based violence, or those exposed to forced recruitment and referred them to specialized services.
OCHA is leading coordination but the spokesperson said the 02/2025 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan identified more than $44,000,000 needed for child-protection efforts alone. The overall appeal for Haiti this year was described as severely underfunded, with less than $68,000,000 received of more than $908,000,000 required — about 7% funded to date, Farhan said.
The U.N. urged additional funding ahead of the hurricane season, saying increased displacement and protection needs risk leaving children vulnerable.
