U.N. peacekeepers report weapons caches, firing and obstructions in southern Lebanon

Farhan, U.N. spokesperson, said U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers continue to discover weapons and ammunition caches and have referred them to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
He said that since the cessation of hostilities in November, UNIFIL peacekeepers have detected about 240 weapons and ammunition caches and referred them to the Lebanese army. In a separate incident, peacekeepers observed two bursts of machine-gun fire from across the Blue Line in the Kafr Qila area today. UNIFIL has recorded nearly 800 trajectories crossing the Blue Line since the cessation of hostilities, the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson also reported several incidents this past week of aggressive behavior and obstructions of movement directed at UNIFIL personnel during routine operations. He reminded parties that peacekeepers work in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces in support of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and said attempts to interfere with peacekeepers would be inconsistent with commitments under that resolution.
The U.N. called on parties to adhere to their commitments and refrain from acts that could jeopardize fragile stability in the area.
