Kyle Burmester, Bannock County public works director, updated the commission on spring maintenance plans and ongoing operations.
Burmester said the department rented a mastic machine and tested it on large potholes, cracks and dips with good results; the mastic work is part of preparation for the county’s upcoming chip-seal program. He said most chip sealing this year will be concentrated in the Chirpy area and that the county is evaluating a request from a nearby city to provide about a mile of work for pay; any intergovernmental work would be brought to the commission for approval.
Burmester said crews are finishing chloride applications (a dust-control program) on about 68 to 70 miles of high-traffic gravel roads and that gravel crews are blading south-end roads to improve access for farmers and other rural users. He reported moving material at the Downey new building complex after sewer-line work and delivering additional gravel where needed.
On vegetation control, Burmester said the county’s spring sterilizing program is nearly complete; crews have moved to broadleaf treatments and a new seasonal employee is working toward licensing. On mosquito control, Burmester said staff have been trapping and inspecting and treating small ponds for larvae; drone spraying has not yet begun because recent cool weather slowed mosquito emergence.
