Comal County Commissioners Court heard an April report from Comal County Public Health on Thursday and approved two items to support local vaccination and preparedness work: Amendment 2 to a Department of State Health Services (DSHS) grant and a memorandum of understanding to provide monthly clinics in Canyon Lake.
The public health report, delivered by Comal County Public Health staff Cheryl Frasier, said the department administered 249 immunizations and performed 11 laboratory tests in April. She reported 234 notifiable conditions were logged, prompting 54 epidemiological investigations that led to 27 confirmed conditions. The department held three outreach events in April reaching about 550 people in New Braunfels and Smithson Valley and completed three point-of-dispensing setup exercises.
"We gave 249 immunizations and performed 11 labs," Frasier said, and she urged residents who are unvaccinated or need vaccination to call Public Health at (830) 221-1150 to schedule an appointment. Public Health is located at 1297 Churchill Drive, Suite 102, New Braunfels.
The court approved Amendment 2 to DSHS contract HHS0014395000019 under the Center for Health Emergency Preparedness and Response (the PGP grant), which the county said will begin July 1. According to the county presentation, the amendment adjusts wording in the statement of work; no other program funding changes were presented at the meeting. Commissioner Leacock moved to approve the amendment; Commissioner Hogg seconded, and the motion carried.
The court also approved a memorandum of understanding with the Community Resource and Recreation Center of Canyon Lake (CRRC) to allow the county public health department to hold clinics at the CRRC free of charge. Public Health said clinics will be held the first Wednesday of every month, with appointments scheduled through the county public health office. Commissioner Crownover moved to approve the MOU; Commissioner Webb seconded, and the motion carried.
Why it matters: county officials framed the actions as efforts to make vaccinations and preparedness more accessible across Comal County and to maintain state grant support for emergency preparedness efforts. The department specifically highlighted national increases in measles cases and urged vaccination.
The court took the actions by voice/hand vote; no individual roll-call tallies were read into the record.
