The Muskego Public Library Board approved updates to the library director job description at its May 7 meeting, adding specific technology competencies, emphasizing professional development and clarifying physical expectations for the role.
Kate, human resources, said the draft includes essential duties and a knowledge, skills and abilities section; trustees asked that the posting name common digital tools (Zoom, streaming platforms, social media and basic graphic-design software) and that the job include participation in professional development and continuing education. The board also asked that the brochure and posting stress the library’s downtown, walkable location.
Board members discussed physical-requirement language. The draft included a 50-pound lifting item; trustees agreed to keep physical tasks in the job description but to qualify them as “occasional” rather than routine. The board also agreed that possession of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license should be listed as preferred rather than mandatory, noting some candidates may relocate and obtain a state license after hire.
Tracy and other trustees emphasized that, while the director will occasionally perform hands-on tasks (emptying book drops, moving carts during major operations), such duties are not daily expectations; the job description will be revised to reflect occasional duties and standard physical requirements.
The board approved the revised job description with the discussed edits by voice vote. Staff will publish the revised description alongside the job posting and brochure.
