District reports preliminary test-score gains and outlines plan for Bowling Green—Hilltop merger

Superintendent Miss Bennett and curriculum director Dr. Albritton presented districtwide, preliminary assessment results and operational updates Thursday.
Bennett reported 316 graduates with 15 additional pending for the class of 2025, 101 industry certifications earned by seniors and that 10 seniors completed an AA (through State College partnerships). She also reported a growing ROTC program with 144 participants, including 79 freshmen, and noted community partnerships that supported student opportunities.
Dr. Albritton summarized first-round assessment data for reading, math and science (third through tenth grades). For reading, the presentation showed 14 of 20 grade-level cells improved (70% of cells) and one cell maintained. For math, 10 of 18 cells increased (roughly 56% of cells). Science showed notable gains in eighth grade (from 36% to 50%). The eighth-grade Algebra score (percent of students scoring Level 3 or above) increased from 84% to 90% in preliminary data. Board members and staff described these figures as unofficial early results that will be refined for official school grades.
Bennett also described logistics for the Bowling Green Elementary and Hilltop Elementary merger: teachers have received next-year assignments, moving schedules and a planned site visit to assess classroom furniture needs. The district arranged a moving company for three days to assist with grades K-5; maintenance staff will move resource and ancillary rooms.
Other items discussed in the superintendent—s update included VPK assessment results (one site met expectations with a score of 32.5; Wauchula Elementary had an "excellent" rating at 61% with 17 of 19 students making a learning gain), an athletics update (track team qualification for state and a relay record) and planned board workshops on policy review.
Board members asked questions about logistics for the merger, bus assignments and moving supports; the superintendent said letters notifying families about bus numbers were sent and that Bowling Green indicated it will not need a crossing guard next year based on routes.
The board scheduled a workshop for June 26 at 4:00 p.m. to review and update board policies.
