Staff said the requested funds would support robotics instruction from elementary through high school and cover competitive programs that participate in FIRST Tech and other leagues. "Sometimes the motors will die out, so we have to buy motors," a district staff member said, describing recurring kit maintenance needs. Staff also said federal CTE and technology funds contribute to robotics purchases and that campuses submit needs assessments or email requests to the department on a rolling basis.
Trustees pressed for a more systematic approach. Trustee Ramirez asked whether the district has inventoried every robotics team and quantified equipment needs; staff said campuses provide requests and the district maintains spreadsheets and sponsor communication to assemble summer purchasing lists. Trustee Morales urged a districtwide expectation so more campuses build programs from elementary upward, while Trustee Lopez flagged possible tariff-driven cost increases and recommended officials evaluate potential higher prices.
Local programs and sponsors: Trustees and staff highlighted Santa Maria Elementary as a model that runs robotics for kindergarten through fifth grade and noted that elementary pipelines feed high-school teams that have produced state-level results. Trustees proposed stipends for sponsors and expanded community sponsorships and grant searches to underwrite program expansion so teams are not dependent on uncompensated volunteer labor.
Next steps: Staff said they will collect detailed inventories from every campus robotics sponsor, confirm parts and replacement needs after the spring competition season, and return with a prioritized procurement plan. Trustees also discussed hosting more in-district competitions and pursuing external sponsors and grants to scale equipment purchases and training.
