County approves chief paramedic position (grade 20) to oversee CCMS staffing

The Audit Control Committee on April 17 approved setting the salary for a chief paramedic position at grade 20, promoting an existing senior paramedic into the role and assigning supervisory responsibilities for county emergency medical services.
Noel Gutman, director of Emergency Services, and Pani Peters, principal counselor for Emergency Services, said the county already budgeted the chief paramedic position for 2025 but staff and HR agreed the duties align with a grade‑20 classification rather than the grade‑17 level originally budgeted. The position will not increase headcount immediately because the department does not plan to fill the senior‑paramedic spot that promotion would vacate.
Officials described the role as overseeing about 28 full‑time paramedics and EMTs across the county and covering on-call responsibilities three out of four weeks per month. Committee members noted the growth of CCMS and the need for additional oversight as services have expanded.
The committee approved the salary-setting resolution by voice vote. Presenters said on-call pay assumptions were accounted for in the 2025 budget and that the department will not incur additional on‑call costs for the budget year as a result of the change.
