Residents press commissioners on gravel-road maintenance; board requests road-commission briefing

Several residents and commissioners raised repeated concerns about the condition and maintenance of gravel and rural roads in Clare County, asking the board to request a briefing from the county road commission.

Speakers said some roads are degrading because of material choices (pit run versus 23A gravel), lack of routine maintenance and staffing or equipment turnover at the road commission. One resident said delivery drivers and emergency vehicles are being forced onto lawns or damaging mailboxes because of poor road conditions; another said a neighbor suffered a serious injury after a condition-related event.

Commissioners noted the road commission has described staffing turnover and supply-chain-driven increases in material costs; road officials recently held a “gravel workshop” to explain techniques such as pulverizing and regrading and described limits created by per-mile costs that have increased substantially. Commissioners and residents urged the board to invite county road commission leadership to present to the board so commissioners can report back to constituents with consistent information about priorities, materials and timelines.
