Clare County accepts DOJ grant, votes to hire grant-funded criminal analyst

A county official described the analyst's duties as compiling and analyzing data from prior federal grants, identifying crime hot spots, reviewing digital evidence and assisting with redaction of body-worn camera footage for discovery.
A staff member said the analyst would also produce dynamic trial exhibits and work with cell-phone and other electronic records to support prosecutions. Commissioners were told the position would be funded 100% by the DOJ award for the three-year grant term.
During discussion, several commissioners said they had learned of the grant from news coverage and asked why the board had not been briefed earlier. County staff said the prosecutor’s office and grant coordinators had followed prior practice used with earlier federal grants and that the prosecutor’s office had been involved in the application and budget review.
The board conducted a roll call vote and approved the grant acceptance and the hire. County staff said they would circulate the grant agreement and the position’s job description to commissioners following the meeting.
A related personnel and finance implementation step remains: staff must complete the hiring process and confirm payroll and benefits arrangements under the grant terms before the position begins.
