UW Extension proposes phased plan for youth participation on Sawyer County board

Donna Nucchi, UW Extension youth development and 4‑H educator, updated the committee on plans to introduce youth voice on the Sawyer County board.
Nucchi said she has been researching models used by other counties and working with a regional planning manager experienced in the program. She described the effort as a collaboration between Extension educators, the county board and the county administrator and said further discussion with the incoming county administrator would be appropriate before full implementation.
"I do think that a full implementation of youth on the county board in fall of 2026 would be more ideal and more successful so that we have time to explore the options and create a successful implementation plan," Nucchi said. She proposed holding a government day where area youth would visit county departments, meet department heads and learn county services as a recruitment tool for the fall 2026 program.
Committee members supported the approach and suggested engaging local schools and civics classes to generate interest. Nucchi said she will continue planning, gather successful options from other counties and report back to the committee.
