UW Extension outlines community surveys, follow-up evaluations in Sawyer County

University of Wisconsin Extension staff reported on recent community needs assessments in Spider Lake and other townships, ongoing evaluations to measure multi-year impacts, and requests for committee input on a county housing profile survey.
Laurie Baltricious, UW Extension, told the Sawyer County Economic Development UW Extension Committee that Extension has completed community needs assessments and is running follow-up evaluations to measure impact.
The work includes a community-initiated survey in Spider Lake and ongoing projects in the towns of Draper and Round Lake. Baltricious said Extension provides a customized questionnaire and an unbiased process to help communities identify strengths, weaknesses and long-term goals. "The questionnaire is designed typically with the community," she said.
Baltricious said the Town of Draper is about halfway through its process and Round Lake indicated interest but is not ready to proceed. She also described strategic-planning work with the Tiger Cat Lake Association, which included mission and vision development and a brainstorming exercise to set future roles for that association.
Baltricious noted a formal evaluation requirement for Extension work and said she will focus this year on tying up loose ends from the last two to three years and assessing short-, medium- and long-term impacts. She said she is running an evaluation of the Spider Lake assessment and is soliciting more responses to a housing profile survey she emailed to committee members. At the time of the meeting she reported receiving only two committee responses and asked members to complete the confidential survey.
Committee members asked whether Extension compares its surveys to other local assessments such as Tamarac Health’s community health assessment or Indianhead Community Action Agency reports. Baltricious said Extension aggregates existing plans and data where relevant and includes that material when communities ask for it or when grant work requires it.
Baltricious offered to share the county housing profile with the committee; a committee member asked that the report be circulated to newer members.
