A representative from the sheriffs office presented its quarterly report to the Washington Terrace City Council on May 6, summarizing notable cases, specialty-unit activity and trend data for the first quarter.
Cases highlighted included complex domestic-violence matters where deputies used Crime Scene Investigation resources and a local victim-exam provider (referred to as NuSAFE) to document strangulation injuries; deputies said those tools aided an arrest in an aggravated child-abuse case. The sheriffs office also described a rapid-response overdose/rescue in which a deputy administered naloxone (Narcan) after encountering a subject actively harming himself; staff praised the deputys quick actions.
Other cases included child abuse involving an adult sibling who assaulted a younger sibling with a hanger; an arrest for a registered sex-offender who had not updated his registry address after living in Utah; and an incident where a caregiver admitted supplying marijuana products to a young child, which led to search-warrant execution and child-protection coordination.
Specialty units: School Resource Officers and the gang unit handled several school-related incidents this year, including gang-related fights and a stabbing at T. H. Bell; deputies noted a steady stream of drug offenses in schools, most commonly THC vape pens. The traffic unit reported focused monthly themes (for example, move-over compliance and distracted driving) and promoted ride-along opportunities for council members.
Statistics and trends: The presenter said Group A offenses (serious crimes) were generally steady, drug offenses increased in Quarter 1, and larcenies/thefts decreased noticeably compared with the same period last year. Traffic citations and misdemeanor citations were lower versus the prior-year quarter, and the office reported newly independent deputies who completed field training.
Why it matters: The report underscores changing enforcement needs, including enhanced evidence collection for strangulation and rising school-based THC vape incidents, and highlights resource needs for specialty units.
Next steps: The sheriffs office continues focused traffic enforcement and school partnerships; the presenter invited council members to schedule ride-alongs with traffic and other units.
