Wylie’s Animal Shelter Advisory Board heard an update Thursday that the municipal animal shelter is operational after renovation work but remains far below the capacity needed to handle the city’s intake, and that staff continue to wrestle with final construction fixes, veterinary caseloads and volunteer reactivation.
The advisory board placed the shelter’s 2025 first-quarter statistical report on file with an amendment correcting how feline euthanasia reasons were categorized; the board also approved minutes from its March meeting.
Shelter manager (name not specified) told the board the shelter has reopened and is currently operating with only one kennel available and “about 66% under what we really need in order to house enough felines in our facility.” The manager said isolation rooms and state quarantine areas are functioning, staff are addressing a surge in sick animals with additional veterinary calls, and volunteer and community-service programs restarted only in the past two weeks.
