Hampton City Council on Wednesday voted to approve a use permit (25‑0103) allowing a funeral home and mortuary operation in an existing suite at 611 Rotary Street in Copeland Industrial Park.
City planner Han Vu described the proposal as a retrofit of an existing light‑manufacturing building that would include a preparation room, office space, a walk‑in refrigeration unit and a retort (cremation) facility. Vu said the proposed suite would not be open to the general public; the planned crematorium would be available to serve funeral homes and law enforcement agencies. The site is located in the Light Manufacturing (M‑2) district and the future land use map calls for business/industrial uses.
Planning staff and the Planning Commission recommended approval of the use permit subject to seven standard conditions covering parking, traffic circulation, certification of occupancy and permit compliance, Vu said. There was no community meeting held for this application at the time of the staff report, Vu added.
No members of the public signed up to speak during the public hearing. A council member moved approval of use permit 25‑0103 with the seven conditions as outlined in the agenda packet; the motion passed by roll call with all members voting “Aye.”
The application identifies the operator as Jeffrey McPlant; the motion directs city staff to process required permits and certificate of occupancy reviews in accordance with the standard conditions attached to the use permit.
