The Jobs Conference Committee considered language that would change the name of the Small Business Growth Acceleration Program to "Made in Minnesota" in Minnesota statute. Marty Seifert, testifying for Enterprise Minnesota, said the organization wanted the program name updated for marketing purposes while Enterprise Minnesota itself would remain a statutory nonprofit.
Chair Pinto and other members asked whether the term "Made in Minnesota" could create confusion because it has been used historically in other contexts. Seifert acknowledged a 1980s-era state program with a similar name had been controversial but said the current change was a marketing decision for the training-and-manufacturing support program. DEED confirmed the program is run by Enterprise Minnesota and that legislative permission was required to change the statutory name.
Representative Richard Baker voiced no objection and said he could accept the senate suggestion. The committee directed staff to place the renaming provision in the appropriate bucket for the conference committee bill; no formal vote occurred during the hearing.
