Sumter County council approves rezoning, proclamations and first readings on bonds and budget

The council approved third reading of RZ25-01, a request to rezone 35 ADP Georgeburg Road from Agricultural Conservation to Neighborhood Commercial. Council also opened a public hearing and advanced an ordinance related to the sale of county property that included a letter from Jerry Lockyer offering to purchase the parcel for $30,000. The council unanimously approved Resolution No. 25-0-2 declaring April as Fair Housing Month and approved a proclamation declaring May as Mental Health Awareness Month.
On capital financing, county staff presented a bond request initially listed as $7,759,564; during discussion the amount for the issuance was corrected to $5,000,000. Council also gave first reading to the county budget by title only. The budget presentation for first reading showed revenues of $64,146,647 and expenditures of $65,362,278, leaving a first-reading deficit of $1,215,631. Councilmembers noted additional budget workshops are scheduled and moved the ordinance forward on first reading.
As part of committee reports, the Fiscal, Tax and Property Committee reported it had instructed staff to proceed with the sale of two properties; those sales will be returned to council for formal consideration in future meetings with the required readings.
