The Board introduced an ordinance amending Article I, Chapter 2, Section 2-4.1 of the Kings County Code to clarify and reaffirm that the director of public works may serve as county surveyor and road commissioner and to allow the county to meet professional licensing requirements through designation of qualified employees, hiring licensed professionals, or contracting as needed.
Michael Amin, administrative analyst, explained the amendment preserves consolidation originally established by Ordinance No. 682 in April 2017 and expands language to outline the director’s responsibilities, including oversight of fleet services and county-owned facility maintenance. Amin said the ordinance allows flexibility for meeting license requirements when the appointed director does not hold every necessary professional license.
The ordinance carries no immediate fiscal impact, Amin said; any staffing or contracting costs would be evaluated through the budget process. The board voted to waive the first reading and introduce the ordinance; county staff said the ordinance will return for adoption on May 20, 2025, and would become effective 30 days after adoption.
