Ryan, identified as a forester team leader for Ashland‑Iron County, told the committee the county forest liaison position is vacant after a recent staff change and recruitment is underway with an anticipated June 9 start date for the selected candidate.
"We have started our recruitment process for our forester class this year, with an anticipated start date of June 9," Ryan said.
In the interim, staff said Garrett Lonke, a forest ranger based in Mellon, will cover liaison duties and county foresters and a new LTE forester (Sam Shaw) will assist with workload. Ryan said the county is committed to 848 hours of assistance in the county forest fiscal year and has met roughly 73% of that standard to date, with about 220 hours remaining.
Garrett described timber sale work being prepared off Eastside Fire Lane near Glidden; maps and final materials remain to be completed and the sale is expected to be put out to bid in the next cycle. Staff also said they will complete recon and sale closeouts through the spring.
Staff provided a breakdown of 2024 revenue and said checks went out to four towns that host county forest lands; they noted a longstanding committee agreement to give the Town of Gordon one half of 1% of revenues after other obligations are paid because a town road is critical for timber access.
The committee received the staffing and revenue reports as informational; no formal forestry actions were taken at the meeting.
