Conejo Canyons bridge wins APWA award; Thousand Oaks proclaims National Public Works Week

The council held two public‑works items May 13: an award presentation from the American Public Works Association (APWA) and a Public Works Week proclamation.
Justin Ling, city traffic engineer for Simi Valley and past president of APWA’s Ventura County chapter, presented the APWA transportation award to the city for the Conejo Canyons Bridge project. Ling said the 150‑foot weathered‑steel truss bridge "connects existing trails on either side of the Arroyo Conejo Creek" and provides emergency vehicular access out of Hill Canyon in wildfire situations. He said the project "is an important link between the Conejo Canyons and Wildwood Park open space areas." The presentation credited a collaboration between the City of Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA).
Mayor Newman and council members acknowledged the award and asked that public‑works staff, COSCA and APWA join for photos. Deputy Public Works Director John Minkle announced the Public Works Department’s annual open house at the Municipal Service Center in Newbury Park as part of National Public Works Week. Mayor Newman presented a proclamation declaring the week of May 18 to be National Public Works Week in Thousand Oaks.
Council members cited the bridge’s public‑safety benefit, noting it is wide enough to accommodate a fire engine and that it improves maintenance access for park and public‑works staff.
