Wauwatosa council clears brief fireworks displays for high school graduation ceremonies

The Wauwatosa Common Council approved fireworks-user permits for Wauwatosa West and Wauwatosa East high school graduation ceremonies scheduled in mid-June.
City staff told the council that fire had approved the permits and police later cleared them as well. Staff clarified that the fireworks displays are short — approximately 15 seconds — timed to coincide with graduates tossing caps, and that the listed application times (8–9 p.m. and 11 a.m.–noon) reflect a window during which the salute will occur rather than an ongoing display.
Staff said the school district will notify neighboring properties in advance and post notices on school display signs at Eisenhower West and Whitman along Center Street. The clerk also said governmental entities are exempt from certain restrictions discussed last year, which staff has applied in prior comparable permits.
The council approved the fireworks permits as part of a grouped vote of related items. The applicant, named in the packet as Kevin Hoise of the Wauwatosa School District, was not present at the meeting.
