The Wauwatosa Youth Commission presented its annual report to the Community Affairs Committee, describing recruitment efforts, outreach activities and volunteer projects.
Members said recruiting new youth members was a priority and outlined several outreach steps used this year, including placing information in Wauwatosa East and West High School registration packets, participating in registration days at both high schools, posting on school messaging systems and promoting the commission via the city’s social channels and neighborhood outlets.
The commission reported a spring survey that had generated about 60 responses so far; top responses included requests for more social events and career- and life-skills programming such as resume-writing and tax workshops.
Youth Commissioners said they explored a Battle of the Bands event as a recruitment tool but did not stage it this year because too few bands entered. “Through this process, although it didn’t work out in the end, we learned a lot about event planning, and we hope to use this knowledge to organize another event in the future,” said Josie Marshall, a commission member.
The commission described ongoing support for the city’s Storybook Walk in parks, including buying materials and rotating pages, and said it is assisting the Veterans Memorial Committee with research and invitations for a future dedication ceremony. Bridal Reardon, another Youth Commission member, said the survey results will be reviewed at the commission’s next meeting and will help plan future events.
Committee members and audience attendees praised the presentation and encouraged continued outreach. No formal committee action was taken on the report.
The Youth Commission asked the council to post a link to the recruitment survey on the city website (wauwatosa.net) and said it will continue to coordinate with the mayor’s office and other city commissions on programming.
