The Tamworth Select Board voted May 13 to appoint a committee charged with examining pedestrian safety, parking layout and bicycle flow in and around Tamworth village.
An informal group of residents and business owners had proposed short-term measures including relocating granite bumper blocks to create a pedestrian walkway between the Lyceum porch and parked cars and restriping parking as diagonal spaces to regain traffic width. A resident who helped organize the informal group said road agent Richard Roberts had been consulted and originally indicated he could carry out the work within the department's budget, but the board and residents agreed the road agent should be consulted again about winter maintenance and safety implications.
Resident Ryan O'Connor urged the board to require site plans showing dimensions and right-of-way limits and to confirm ADA accessibility for any proposed pedestrian path. Speakers discussed typical ADA dimensions (a 5-foot accessible path) and local constraints such as a utility pole and seasonal snow-shedding from storefront roofs. Organizers volunteered to prepare a drawing with dimensions for the board and to contact property owners about measures such as snow guards on roofs.
A motion to appoint a committee with a charter addressing pedestrian, traffic and bike flow was made and seconded; the board called the roll and approved the committee. The board instructed staff to post for committee membership, invite participants from the earlier informal group and require that any appointed members follow standard committee posting and meeting rules.
Board members said they will not implement physical changes until the committee reports back with a plan, recommended dimensions, right-of-way verification and maintenance guidance from the road agent.
