The Tigard Police Department received its third accreditation award from the Northwest Accreditation Alliance during the council meeting. Scott Hayes, executive director of the Northwest Accreditation Alliance, presented the award and described accreditation as a step toward promoting agency accountability, transparency and alignment with professional standards.
“As introduced, I am Scott Hayes, the executive director for the Northwest Accreditation Alliance… I congratulate you in receiving your third award of accreditation,” Hayes said. He explained accreditation requires compliance with standards in policies, procedures and relevant Oregon statutes and administrative rules and that agencies must demonstrate proof of compliance.
Chief McDonald and other department leaders credited accreditation manager Shelley Wert for organizing the department’s documentation and said reaccreditation is on a three‑year cycle. Chief McDonald said staff continue to update policies and proofs annually to maintain compliance.
The presentation emphasized accreditation’s role in building community trust and noted the Northwest Accreditation Alliance was founded under the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police and related statewide groups to support law enforcement professional standards.
No formal council action was required — the item was a recognition and presentation rather than a policy decision.
