Garden Grove lays out summer camps, concerts, pool schedule and new park installations

City staff presented an overview of the Community Services Department’s summer offerings, including Movies in the Park (June 6 and Aug. 8), a traveling pump track (May 19–25), a summer youth basketball league with 250 participants across 26 teams, aquatics programs running April 28–Sept. 5, and Camp Grove day camp (June 9–Aug. 8).
Mark Freeman, identified in the meeting as a Community Services presenter, gave the City Council a detailed update on the department’s 2025 summer programs, festivals and services.
The presentation outlined dates, locations and participation numbers for a range of activities aimed at families, teens and seniors. “As mentioned, I’m here to provide you with an update on the Community Services Department Summer Programs and Services,” Freeman said at the start of his report.
The city will host a traveling pump track for skateboards, bikes, scooters and inline skates at Garden Grove Park from the evening of May 19 through the morning of May 25; riders must wear safety equipment and ride at their own risk. Movies in the Park will include Disney’s Inside Out 2 at Magnolia Park on Friday, June 6 (dinner and activities starting about 5:30 p.m.; movie at 8:30 p.m.) and a sing‑along showing of Wicked (2024) on Historic Main Street on Aug. 8, also beginning at 8:30 p.m.
The Garden Grove Community Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce are partnering with the city on the summer concert series, which begins June 19 at Eastgate Park, and on the annual Voice of Garden Grove high school competition; the winner receives a $500 prize and a $500 donation to their high‑school choir. The department said registrations for the Voice begin May 20.
Staff described the Summer Youth Basketball League as having about 250 participants, ages 6–14, arranged in 26 teams; each team is guaranteed eight regular‑season games plus playoffs. Camp Grove, the citywide day camp at Edgar Park, runs June 9–Aug. 8 for ages 5–12, Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–6 p.m.; weekly excursion fees vary by destination.
Aquatics programs began April 28 and run through Sept. 5. Group, semi‑private and private Red Cross swim lessons are available; recreational swim and pool rentals run June 2–Aug. 7 out of Magnolia Park Pool and Gary Hall Pool at Eastgate Park. Freeman said Woodbury Park Pool will be closed this summer due to the Woodbury Park Improvement Project.
Other items noted: a car‑seat check event June 4 at Bridal Elementary (Magnolia Family Resource Center), a five‑week financial literacy class beginning May 15, senior‑center events including a kickoff barbecue June 18 and a Duffy boat outing July 15, and the Foods of Garden Grove live tasting event scheduled for Friday, Sept. 26 at Village Green Park.
Council members praised staff for the breadth of offerings and encouraged promotion tied to upcoming regional events. Councilmembers also mentioned opportunities to leverage the city’s tourism and festival calendar as part of outreach to visitors from neighboring jurisdictions.
