Woburn School Committee hears update on redistricting implementation, bus tours and family notifications

WOBURN — School district staff told the School Committee on May 20 that implementation steps for the recently approved elementary redistricting plan are underway, including family notifications, bus tours and building-level transition planning.
Miss Young, who is coordinating implementation, said the district updated the street-address list on the Woburn Public Schools website and sent a confirmation form to impacted families. "Any families we've not heard back from yet tomorrow, we'll start getting phone calls," Young said, describing outreach by building staff and the family and community engagement team.
Young described a schedule of bus tours and building walk-throughs for the next two weeks and said building principals accepting new students have already begun individualized outreach. She said principals will hold virtual transition meetings starting June 6 so staff can plan classroom placements and coordinate services for students who receive special education or multilingual learner services.
On registration counts, Young said kindergarten registration numbers are coming in earlier than in previous years and that she is "feeling pretty hopeful" about current registration figures.
Committee members asked about communication to families moving from specific neighborhoods. Miss Cormier asked whether Avalon-area families now assigned to Alta Vista were reached; Young said building principals had sent direct notifications and that the district would review street lists to ensure clarity.
Vice Chair Chisholm and other members announced a resources subcommittee meeting to continue implementation planning. No formal committee action was taken; the update was informational.
