Councilors said a traffic signal formerly protected the crossing but was removed after a crash; residents and councilors described repeated collisions and pedestrian safety incidents since the light was removed. Councilor Devine (Councilor Devine) and others asked for an immediate remedy, noting the intersection serves as a major route into the city and that the former signal reduced crashes in the past.
Attorney Bissonnette noted the city could pursue a temporary or replacement light and that repaving or reconstruction projects funded through state programs sometimes allow temporary signals while a long-term decision is finalized. Councilors also requested that the alarm division be sent a copy of the order in case the department already has portable or spare equipment that could be deployed quickly.
The committee voted to adopt the orders and refer them to the law department, the alarm division, the mayor and DPW for immediate follow-up.
