Sandpoint mayor previews new downtown parking lot: ribbon cutting, cameras and a community calendar

Grimm said the ribbon cutting was scheduled for about 58 minutes after the commission meeting, that all conduit and electrical work is complete and that four smart cameras will be installed on the light posts, which are expected within two weeks. He described the cameras as an investigative tool used by the police — able to search video by descriptive queries — and said the equipment helped identify a suspected arsonist in a prior case.
The parking lot project also includes space for a community calendar display in the southwest corner; Grimm described potential units roughly “36 inches by 4 or 5 feet” and said the city is evaluating low‑light digital paper options to present text‑based event information. He said the city has not selected a vendor and will engage commissioners on possible art wraps or color treatments for the calendar unit.
Grimm said several islands will receive new trees for Arbor Day and that north/south entrances on Church and Oak were removed to improve safety near bike paths and crossings. He also noted that the city council is discussing a broader parking policy and that paid parking could be implemented in the lot next year to generate unencumbered revenue for downtown maintenance and future parking projects.
No formal commission action was recorded on the parking lot update; commissioners provided positive feedback on the appearance and planting plans and discussed attending the ribbon cutting.
