Mister Cortez, director of special operations, told the Committee on Safety and Security on May 13 that Wake County Schools equipped three existing vehicles with mobile command capabilities using grant funds from the Sanford Safer Schools program.
The district said the total grant award for the 2023—24 period was $486,000; of that amount, staff allocated $44,000 to outfit three vehicles with technology and communications equipment that enables —a unified command— at incident sites. The vehicles are intended to move command-center resources to an active school incident, provide a visible coordination point for law enforcement and emergency services and support functions such as student reunification.
Why it matters: District staff said after-action reviews and exercises identified gaps in on-site visibility, communications and technology. Mobile command vehicles, they said, allow the district to deploy essential coordination tools and personnel to a school or alternate reunification site quickly.
Cortez described the vehicles as part of an ongoing assessment of emergency-response capabilities. He said the three vehicles are strategically positioned across the district to allow a rapid response and that staff will demonstrate one vehicle outside the meeting for committee members to inspect.
The committee conducted a short field demonstration after the briefing. No formal board vote or additional funding request was taken at the meeting; staff framed the update as an informational briefing about how grant funds were used during the 2324 grant period.
