Board schedules public hearing on updated building, environmental and incident response policies ahead of hurricane season

The Pinellas County School Board voted 6–0 on May 13 to set a public hearing and second reading on proposed amendments to three district policies: 7101 (building permits in the code enforcement office), 8400 (environmental health and safety issues) and 8401.01 (critical incident response).
Staff described the amendments as a product of continuous improvement and preparation for hurricane season. Proposed updates to Policy 7101 align building permits and maintenance thresholds with state law, require registered and certified reviewers and inspectors, and clarify limits on maintenance spending per state limits. Amendments to Policy 8400 standardize indoor environmental quality language districtwide and remove references to other board policies. Changes to Policy 8401.01 update components of the district’s safety and security program and clarify that staff are compensated for assigned incident duties (not for unassigned sheltering in place or extended unassigned duty).
The district said the revisions respond to staff concerns about clarity on compensation during hurricane duty and to standardize practice. The motion to set the public hearing and second reading was made by board member Peters and seconded by board member Kane; the vote was 6–0.
The board will consider the amended policies at a public hearing and second reading set for June 24, according to staff.
